5G Around the World: Which Countries Have the Best Coverage?
We tested 5G speeds in 30+ countries so you don't have to. Here's where you'll get the fastest connection on your next trip.
5G is no longer a novelty reserved for a handful of flagship devices in major cities. As of 2025, 5G coverage spans over 80 countries and is the default experience on most modern smartphones in urban areas. But coverage quality varies enormously — from the dense, ultra-fast millimetre-wave deployments in South Korea to patchwork sub-6GHz networks in parts of South America.
The Global Leaders: South Korea and Japan
South Korea consistently tops independent speed tests for both 5G download speeds and coverage reliability. SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus have built nationwide 5G networks that cover not just cities but most major highways and rural areas. Average 5G speeds regularly exceed 400 Mbps in Seoul.
Japan is close behind, with NTT Docomo, SoftBank, and au deploying aggressive expansion programmes ahead of the 2025 Osaka Expo. Tokyo in particular has some of the most consistent 5G coverage of any city in the world.
Europe: A Patchwork Picture
European 5G coverage is highly uneven. Switzerland, the Netherlands, and the UK lead the continent for both speed and coverage. Germany has been slower to deploy despite being Europe's largest economy — regulatory and infrastructure challenges have slowed its rollout. In Southern and Eastern Europe, 5G is primarily a major-city phenomenon.
- Switzerland: Excellent nationwide coverage, consistent 200–300 Mbps
- Netherlands: Dense urban coverage, strong in rural areas
- UK: Good in major cities, more patchy in rural England
- Germany: Limited to major cities and motorway corridors
- Italy, Spain: Urban centres well covered, rural areas mostly 4G
USA: Fast Where It Works, Absent Where It Doesn't
T-Mobile leads 5G coverage in the USA with a network that covers a large portion of the population. Verizon's mmWave 5G offers exceptional speeds in dense urban environments but penetrates buildings poorly and has limited range. AT&T sits in the middle. For travellers, 5G will be reliable in major metros and airports; rural areas are predominantly 4G.
Traveller's Note
SkyeSIM plans automatically connect to the best available network — whether that's 5G, 4G LTE, or 3G. You'll always get the fastest connection available in your location without any configuration.
Emerging Markets: Faster Than You'd Expect
Several emerging markets have leapfrogged developed nations in 5G deployment. Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Qatar all have excellent 5G coverage, partly because they could build modern infrastructure from scratch without legacy constraints. Brazil's major cities are well covered, and India's rapid 5G rollout by Reliance Jio and Airtel has transformed connectivity in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore.
