Why not a local SIM or roaming?
Internet in Dubai and the UAE
The United Arab Emirates has two mobile operators: e& (formerly Etisalat) and du. Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the other emirates have excellent 4G and 5G coverage, including in the metro and shopping malls.
The UAE isn't in the EU. EU roaming doesn't apply there, so an EU mobile plan charges data at its operator's roaming rates. With an eSIM you're online right at the airport: Careem or Uber, maps and messages work from the moment you land.
The UAE restricts internet calls, so WhatsApp and FaceTime voice calls may not work there. Messages, photos and voice notes work as usual.
Good to know before you go to United Arab Emirates
- On a desert safari the signal can disappear: download the map in advance.
- On a winter beach holiday, 1–2 GB a day is usually enough.
- Turn off data roaming on your home SIM so it doesn't run up a bill. Calls and texts still reach you.
