Why not a local SIM or roaming?
Internet in Turkey
Turkey has three mobile operators: Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom. Cities and resorts such as Antalya, Alanya, Side, Kemer and Bodrum have good 4G coverage, enough for maps, messages, video calls and social media. Coverage can be weaker in the mountains and smaller villages.
Turkey isn't in the European Union. EU roaming doesn't apply there, so an EU mobile plan charges data at its operator's roaming rates. With a travel eSIM you pay for the plan up front and know the price before you go.
You can buy a local SIM with your passport at an operator's shop, but on a longer stay a phone brought from abroad has to be registered in Turkey (IMEI registration has a fee). A travel eSIM works as roaming, so this doesn't apply.
Good to know before you go to Turkey
- Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi and switch it on once you've landed.
- Hotel Wi-Fi is often slow or only works in the lobby: your own data is easier on the beach and on excursions.
- For a week by the sea, 1–2 GB a day is usually enough if you don't watch much video.
- Turn off data roaming on your home SIM so it doesn't run up a bill. Calls and texts still reach you.
