Why not a local SIM or roaming?
Internet in Thailand
Thailand has two big mobile operators: AIS and True (which merged with dtac). Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, Pattaya, Chiang Mai and Koh Samui have good 4G and often 5G coverage, and most smaller islands have a signal too.
Thailand isn't in the EU. EU roaming doesn't apply there, so an EU mobile plan charges data at its operator's roaming rates. Tourist SIM cards are sold at the airport, but you have to queue with your passport. With an eSIM you're online the moment you land and can book a Grab ride from the airport.
Good to know before you go to Thailand
- On ferries between islands and on remote beaches the signal can be weaker.
- On a two- or three-week trip an unlimited plan is easier than a fixed amount of data, since Grab, maps and a translation app run all the time.
- Turn off data roaming on your home SIM so it doesn't run up a bill. Calls and texts still reach you.
