Why not a local SIM or roaming?
Internet in Egypt
Egypt has four mobile operators: Vodafone, Orange, e& (formerly Etisalat) and WE. Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh, Cairo and the Nile valley have good 4G coverage. On desert safaris and boat trips the signal can disappear.
Egypt isn't in the EU. EU roaming doesn't apply there, so an EU mobile plan charges data at its operator's roaming rates. If you install the eSIM at home, you're online the moment you land in Hurghada or Sharm el-Sheikh.
Wi-Fi in all-inclusive hotels is often paid, slow or only in the lobby. With your own data you can send photos and book excursions from the beach.
Good to know before you go to Egypt
- Before a desert safari, download the area in Google Maps so it works without a signal.
- On a beach holiday 1 GB a day is usually enough. If you share your connection with your kids or watch video, choose a bigger plan.
- Turn off data roaming on your home SIM so it doesn't run up a bill. Calls and texts still reach you.
