Why not a local SIM or roaming?
Internet in Montenegro
Montenegro has three mobile operators. The coast, including Budva, Kotor, Tivat, Herceg Novi and Ulcinj, has good 4G coverage. In the mountains, such as Durmitor National Park and along the Tara canyon, the signal can be patchy.
Montenegro isn't an EU member, even though it uses the euro. The euro doesn't mean EU roaming: EU roaming doesn't apply there, so an EU mobile plan charges data at its operator's roaming rates.
If you also visit Croatia (Dubrovnik, for example) on the same trip, EU roaming applies there again. It doesn't in Bosnia and Herzegovina or Albania.
Good to know before you go to Montenegro
- On mountain roads the signal can drop for a while: keep the map downloaded on your phone.
- On a one- or two-week beach holiday, 1 GB a day is usually enough.
- Turn off data roaming on your home SIM so it doesn't run up a bill. Calls and texts still reach you.
