How to Set Up Your eSIM Before You Travel: A Complete Guide
Everything you need to know about installing and activating your SkyeSIM eSIM — before, during, and after your trip.
Setting up an eSIM takes about five minutes, but doing it correctly before you travel — rather than at the airport — makes the experience completely seamless. This guide walks you through every step, from checking compatibility to activating on arrival.
Step 1: Verify Your Device Is eSIM Compatible
Go to your phone's Settings app. On iPhone, navigate to Settings → General → About and scroll down — if you see "Available SIM" or "EID" (Embedded ID), your phone supports eSIM. On Android, go to Settings → Connections → SIM Manager or Settings → Network & Internet → SIM cards. Look for "Add eSIM" or "Download SIM".
- iPhone XS, XR, and all later models (2018+)
- Samsung Galaxy S21 and all later flagship models (on the S20 it depends on the version)
- Google Pixel 3 and all later models
- Most flagship Android phones released after 2020
Step 2: Choose Your Plan and Purchase
Browse SkyeSIM's destination list and select your country. You can choose an unlimited plan — a daily amount of fast data, then unlimited data at a slower speed — for 3 to 30 days, or a data pack with a fixed amount of data. Choose based on how long you're travelling and how much data you typically use. If in doubt, go one size up — it's cheaper than running out and topping up on arrival.
How Much Data Do You Need?
Light use (maps, messaging, social): 100–300 MB per day. Moderate use (streaming music, video calls): 300–800 MB per day. Heavy use (video streaming, hotspot sharing): 800 MB–2 GB per day.
Step 3: Install Your eSIM
After purchase, you'll receive a QR code by email. To install on iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add Cellular Plan → scan the QR code. To install on Android: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add Mobile Plan → scan the QR code. The whole process takes about 60 seconds.
Important: Install your eSIM while connected to Wi-Fi. Some carriers require an active internet connection to download the eSIM profile. Do this at home, not at the airport.
Step 4: Configure Your Data Settings
Once installed, your device will ask which SIM to use for calls, messages, and data. Set your home SIM for calls and messages, and the new eSIM for mobile data. Also enable "Data Roaming" on the eSIM line — this is required for it to work abroad, and it will only use your SkyeSIM plan, not your home carrier's roaming rates.
Step 5: Arrival and Activation
Your eSIM activates the moment your phone connects to a local network at your destination. In most cases, it simply works — you'll see signal bars within seconds of landing. For most plans, the validity period starts when your phone first connects to a network at your destination, so installing it a week before you travel won't waste your days. Each plan page shows exactly when its validity starts.
