Internet in Japan
Japan's mobile operators are NTT docomo, au (KDDI), SoftBank and Rakuten Mobile. Coverage is excellent across the country, including in the metro and on bullet trains.
Japan isn't in the EU. EU roaming doesn't apply there, so an EU mobile plan charges data at its operator's roaming rates. There is less free public Wi-Fi than you might expect, so you'll use your own data every day for navigation and train times.
Good to know before you go to Japan
- Google Maps shows train and metro departures in Japan: keep your data on throughout the trip.
- A translation app's camera helps with menus and signs.
- Turn off data roaming on your home SIM so it doesn't run up a bill. Calls and texts still reach you.
